Breaking News One more chance for Dana (Posted Fri 10:40 am) According to her mother, Dana Vollmer will compete in one final event, the 50-meter freestyle, in the Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. this weekend.
The swimmer from Granbury is seeded 16th in the event and needs to win to secure an automatic berth on the U.S. Team roster at next month's Olympics. Preliminaries are Saturday morning at 11, semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m. and finals Sunday at 7 p.m. She must make the top 16 to reach the semifinals and top eight for finals.
Vollmer said her difficult week at the Trials has been as much a mystery to her as those watching. She added that until she gets a chance to evaluate her performance more, she's not offering any public speculations.
"It hasn't gone as I expected," Vollmer said. "I wouldn't want to say [what went wrong]. I know I have the speed."
Vollmer is in her third Olympic Trials since 2000. She qualified for the 2004 Olympics by winning the 200 freestyle in Long Beach, Calif. and went on to win a gold medal as part of the 800 free relay in Athens.
